Jackal Chain Upgrade Assessment

TL;DR Jackal’s chain software is well behind the wider Cosmos ecosystem. That’s the first real barrier. So we’ve spent the last few weeks properly assessing the upgrade path to SDK v0.47, IBC v7, wasmd v0.46. It went well: Jackal’s custom messages observed in full, the old chain proven deterministic (same inputs, same fingerprint, twice), and the modern protobuf toolchain is already compiling Jackal’s code correctly. Next comes the actual port, replayed against the exact same tests. Results published either way. Nothing touches the live chain until it’s all proven. No reset. Balances, staked JKL, names and history all carry over. A modern stack removes any barriers; attracting builders, storage providers and activity back is a community and governance conversation that follows although I have a number of exciting ideas I’m itching to share with you once we stabilize things. ...

A Note to the Jackal Community

Hi Jackal Community, I’m Simon (Sich) from Orbital Alchemists. We have been validating the Jackal blockchain for about a year now. I loved the idea of Jackal and decentralized storage when I first came across it, I prefer to see real utility rather than much of the DeFi scene. Seeing Patrick and Marston step back was certainly a blow, though completely understandable given the tremendous effort and energy they have poured into the project over the years. ...

Understanding Jackal's Filetree

Quick Notes This article is about the Blockchain “Jackal” - A decentralised file storage chain. It is somewhat technical in nature and intended for developers and infrastructure providers. Many articles that Orbital Alchemists write are for non technical audiences : A Journey into the Roots of Decentralisation This article is an update to my recent post: Can Jackal Be Resurrected Sustainably? The Filetree Question When people hear that Jackal is a “blockchain for file storage,” it’s natural to assume the chain itself is holding files — photos, documents, videos — the way a hard drive would. It isn’t. The actual bytes of your file never touch the blockchain. Instead, file contents live off-chain, distributed across Jackal’s storage providers, while the blockchain holds something much smaller but arguably more important: a verifiable record of what exists, who owns it, and who’s allowed to see it. ...
