TextRoots: A New Root System for the Digital Individual

We don’t usually think about where our thoughts live.

We open an app, type something down, maybe organise it into folders or tags, and move on. Notes, ideas, plans, fragments of thinking — all captured in tools that feel permanent.

But they aren’t.


The Trap We Don’t See

Modern software has trained us into a quiet dependency.

Our personal knowledge — journals, research, tasks, creative work — increasingly lives inside closed systems. These systems are convenient, polished, and powerful… but they come with an unspoken condition:

Your data exists within the application, not independently of it.

If the product changes direction, introduces restrictions, raises prices, or disappears entirely, your data becomes harder to access, harder to move, and in some cases, effectively trapped.

We’ve outsourced not just storage, but control.

These formats don’t require a specific app to exist. They don’t depend on a vendor. They can be opened, parsed, transformed, and understood by any future system.

From App to System

TextRoots began with a simple frustration:

What started as a modular editor quickly revealed a deeper problem. The issue wasn’t the editor — it was the lack of an underlying system.

So the perspective shifted.

Instead of building another note-taking app, TextRoots is evolving into something else entirely:

A Personal Content Operating System (pCOS)

An environment where:

  • Your data is independent of any single interface
  • Storage is pluggable (local, IPFS, decentralized networks)
  • Content is structured, composable, and transformable
  • The system adapts to your workflows — not the other way around

In this model, the editor is just one surface. The real value lives underneath — in the orchestration layer that manages how content is stored, transformed, and presented.


Planting the Seed

The name TextRoots is intentional.

A root system is not visible. It sits beneath the surface, quietly supporting everything above it. It connects, nourishes, stabilises, and allows growth over time.

That’s the role TextRoots aims to play.

Not a destination app. Not a platform to lock you in.

But a foundation:

  • where your notes can evolve without being rewritten
  • where your tools can change without breaking your data
  • where your digital life grows from something you actually own

We are at an inflection point.
